Equal Play | Sports Law Discussion: Women Shaping the Legal Side of Sports Law

The ALA Golden Gate Chapter invites Managing Partners and Law Firm Leaders to Equal Play, a special panel discussion featuring women who are shaping the business and practice of sports law in the Bay Area. Join us on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at Covington & Burling LLP, 415 Mission Street, Suite 5400, San Francisco, for a candid conversation with in-house counsel from the San Francisco Giants and Bay FC alongside leading sports law practitioners. Panelists will share how they built their careers, what it takes to lead in a high-profile industry, and why diverse leadership makes organizations stronger on and off the field.  The one hour panel discussion will be preceded and followed by a mixer to allow attendees to network with each other and the panelists.

Moderated by Carolyn McArdle, public address announcer for the San Francisco Giants and a Bay Area radio veteran of more than 30 years, the panel features Amy Tovar, Chief Legal Officer of the San Francisco Giants, who previously served as Associate General Counsel at the Department of Transportation under the Obama Administration and currently teaches sports law at Stanford Law School; Kate Porter, General Counsel of Bay FC, whose career includes international sports disputes before FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport; Teresa "Terry" Johnson, Partner and Co-Chair of WilmerHale's Sports & Gaming Practice, advising teams and owners across the NFL, NBA, and WNBA; and Mariah Cooks of Murphy Pearson Bradley & Feeney, President of the Charles Houston Bar Association, NFLPA Certified Contract Advisor, and an accomplished athlete who represented Cambodia at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.

This event is presented by the Golden Gate Chapter's DEIA Committee, which works to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility across the legal community through education, dialogue, and connection.

Thank you to our sponsors, Afinety, Inc., Acrisure Insurance, Robert Half, Pacific Office Automation, and King Courier, for making this program possible. We hope you will join us.
